Digital learning workshop: my personal reflections

The first time I saw that we would have a class with technology, I found it exciting and interesting to know that we would be using technology in classes. The course has been a good experience, I learned how to use various platforms and also how technology can be implemented in the classroom.

Before the course, my knowledge about the use of technology was just enough and necessary so I have improved in several areas.

I also liked how the professor managed the course and how he taught us to balance education and technology, giving us various dynamic activities so we could learn in different ways. This is something I’ve come to appreciate more, understanding how technology works.

During the course we have done many activities and collaborative work, where the ones that stand out the most were where we used the TPACK and SAMR models, where we had to create classes that included these models.

Also the talk we had with Jesse Gleason, where she told us about various learning tools, such as Mizou and Magic School, which are innovative tools, she also taught us the advantages and disadvantages of using technology.

It’s also important to acknowledge the challenges and limitations that come with technology, I’m also aware of the challenges that come with integrating technology into education.

To close, reflecting on my own experience with technology in education, I can say that it has transformed the way I learn and it has impact on my educational journey, digital tools help me a lot to understand better the many concepts that we studied. Technology has made learning more accessible, personalized, and collaborative.

Home workshop week 11: Applying the TPACK model

Activity: Talk about your favorite movie. Speaking.

Content Knowledge (CK)

Students will talk about their thoughts on a favorite movie, enhancing their speaking skills through a presentation where their will focus on the plot, characters and give their personal opinion on why it is their favorite movie.

Pedagogical Knowledge (PK)

The teacher will guide the students on how they could make their presentation, showing them different platforms where they can create presentations, and will also give them instructions on how to use each one.

Tools: Canva, Power Point

Technological Knowledge (TK)

Students will use technological tools to search for information about their favorite movie, thus giving them different sources of information and film reviews for their presentations.

Tools: IMDb, MUBI, Google

Technological Content Knowledge (TCK)

Students will put their knowledge and vocabulary to work to create each presentation, using the information they searched as support to organize their ideas.

Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK)

Each student will create a presentation of their favorite movie, where they will include images, scenes or quotes as they wish to complement their presentation in addition to information and personal reflection.

Tools: Canva, Power Point, Google slides

Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK)

After creating their presentations, each student will have to present them to the class, thus sharing their reflections, highlighting their favorite movie and why. Each presentation will be uploaded to the platform indicated by the teacher in order to provide feedback and allow each classmate to ask questions or share their thoughts about the film on the platform.

Tools: Google Classroom, AhaSlides, Moodle

Home workshop week 9: International Faculty Second session

In the second session of the international faculty, we continued talking about the importance of AI in education, but we also discussed the SAMR model in more depth. As we saw last week, the SAMR model is for substitution, argumentation, modification and redefinition.

This week we discussed it in more depth, not only about what the method is, but also what it is used for and how it can be used in education. During the second session, with my classmates Eduardo Zamora and Constanza Pino, we had to create an activity based on the SAMR model, where students had to write an article using various tools such as chatgpt, canva, copilot, etc. These tools will help students with grammar, organize their ideas, improve their writing, among others.

This activity helped us see how AI and some platforms can help students improve their work and, in the words of Miss Gleason, make good use of them when working on assignments, projects, activities, etc., as long as the benefits and disadvantages of each are understood, thus avoiding misuse.

Personal Reflection:

The second session was entertaining, especially because of the activity we did, since thanks to this, I was able to better understand the use of various tools and AIs. Also, working with my classmates made it easier to better understand their use, since we were able to see that they are not only a source of “information searching”, but they also serve to help the student be creative and give them different ways to work dynamically.

Learning more about the SAMR model in this second session was super important since Ms. Glease explained to us the importance of this model and how the use of technology can transform teaching and learning.

In conclusion, this session helped me to continue improving some digital skills, also on the different “challenges” that the use of technology has in different areas, not only in education, in how one can learn and teach in a creative way with the help of these digital tools, putting them to good use and being responsible with them.

Home workshop week 8: International Faculty first session

Last Monday we had the first International Faculty session, which was led by Jesse Gleason. Where we did guided activities regarding the importance of technology.

At the beginning, Jesse presented some benefits and challenges of using AI in the classroom and in teaching. Some of the benefits highlighted were increasing accessibility and efficiency, since having access to AI would make many things easier for both the student and the teacher, another was feedback and evaluation, where this could be a guide to create feedback or help guide an evaluation. Some challenges of AI are that it can be misused especially by students, since it can be used as a help tool and also as an easy way out by plagiarizing in assignments, tests and so on, leaving aside critical thinking.

Jesse then explained the SAMR method, which consists of substitution, argumentation, modification and redefinition, Gleason taught us that this method can help us better understand how to incorporate technology in our classes.

To get more comfortable with the session, we played a game of Bingo that consisted of asking each other questions to get to know each other better with our classmates. Then, to finish, Jesse showed us and explained some very useful tools to guide us and help us in preparing to teach.

One of the most notable tools was Magic School. Jesse explained to us that this AI assists and helps the teacher to plan lessons, design tasks, generate material for the class, etc. The AI tools that she showed us are really useful and can help a lot in helping with teaching strategies.

Personal reflection:

This first session was really interesting and fun. First, because I realized that it is much easier to create dynamic and innovative classes for students, since this helps to teach effectively, making classes more enjoyable for everyone.

AI can be very useful for teachers and students as well, but we have to be careful, since they can be misused, so we have to be careful when using them. Magic School’s AI was the one I liked the most, because it offers a variety of elements that can make the teacher’s job easier, making it easy to design and create material for classes.

The first session was very helpful, they taught us several tools that help the teacher’s job and the benefits and challenges of AI. I am sure and excited that the next session will be just as interesting as this one, and that it will also be very helpful.

Home workshop week 7: Creating digital content

Past Simple Activity

Back in the previous semester, I decided to put in an activity we did in Use of English, where we had to work with time structures (past, present and future) but this time I’ll do with past simple.

To start, the teacher will create simple past sentences in Quizizz, which will be incomplete.

In the second part, students will have to form groups to work together and complete the sentences.

The answers will be projected and reviewed as the activity progresses.

Finally, everyone will review how many correct and incorrect answers each group had and then they will correct them together as a whole class.

Home workshop week 6: Locating digital content

English Activity: Imitate a scene from your favorite series/movie. In this activity we had to record our voice and imitate a scene from our favorite series, we uploaded this activity to our blog, so we did use a little technology.

My activity: Record a scene of your choice and upload it to one of the indicated platforms.

Step 1: Each student must choose a scene of any kind, be it works, movies, series, books, etc.

Step 2: Record themselves with the voice recorder.

Step 3: The recording must last at least 3 minutes, said recording can be uploaded to the Flip platform, where their classmates can comment, or to Tiktok, to make a more entertaining activity. In this activity, the intonation and fluency of each student will be evaluated, below I will leave some links that can be helpful so that each one does well!

Home workshop week 5: Forum Unit 1

The first time I saw what the class was about, I thought “this will be kind of easy” but it was actually a challenge because I do know the basics of technology and what it entails but I didn’t know that there were a lot more platforms for education than I already knew so I wasn’t sure how it would go. Now I’m a little more confident about the class and I know a little more about the platforms that exist for education, although some are difficult to use and I realized that when doing the assignments because I had to ask, watch tutorials and explore for myself how they were used, so I personally prefer to stick with the ones I already know and am a little more familiar with, so if you don’t know how to use something, just watch tutorials and it will help you a lot! I promise you, they were very helpful. I want to keep learning about these platforms and improve my skills too, so I will do my best to keep up so that I can understand much better and I will be able to know well how technology is used in education.
